Sean Woolen

Radiologist

Dr. Sean Woolen is a radiologist who specializes in abdominal imaging and ultrasound. His expertise encompasses abdominal and pelvic MRI, CT, radiographic imaging and ultrasound, as well as using such techniques to perform image-guided biopsies. He is driven to provide high-value care and believes in putting patients first. He is a member of UCSF's patient experience leadership team and serves as director of the clinical prostate MRI program.

Woolen's research focuses on elevating patient-centered care and improving the practice of radiology. His interests include health care policy, contrast media safety, sustainable radiology, prostate MRI and other types of urological imaging. He is a funded investigator, enthusiastic educator and active physician-scientist.

Woolen earned his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed a residency in radiology at the University of Michigan, followed by a fellowship in abdominal imaging and ultrasound at UCSF. He also has a master's degree in biology from Purdue University. He is a member of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Society for Advanced Body Imaging (SABI), Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), and Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU).

Woolen has received numerous honors for his research, including awards for quality investigation and best radiology research article from the University of Michigan, a young investigator award from SABI, the RSNA Travel Award, and an award for student excellence in radiology from Indiana University.
